Can my spouse work?

  • Anyone who intends to work in Canada must apply for a Work Permit before they enter Canada.
  • In most cases, you must apply at a Canadian visa office outside of Canada.
  • Any foreigner who enters Canada to work needs also a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada. An officer will issue the visa at the same time as the documentation that you need to enter Canada as a temporary worker.
  • To immigrate to Canada as a Skilled Worker, please visit the Immigrating to Canada page.
  • Skilled workers have education, work experience, knowledge of English or French, and other abilities that will help them to establish themselves successfully as permanent residents in Canada.
  • Your spouse can apply for an Open Work Permit at the same time as you apply for your skilled worker permit. This will allow him/her to work temporarily in Canada while you are working.
  • A spouse or common-law partner of a skilled foreign worker authorized to work in Canada for more than six months may qualify for a work permit without confirmation from HRSDC ( Human Resources and Skills Development Canada). They will need to submit a separate application for a work permit along with the application fee.
  • For more information see the CIC Spousal Program Website.
  • An Open Work Permit means that your spouse doesn’t need an employment contract from a specific employer in Canada in advance. You on the other hand must have a specific employer who will sponsor your come to Canada.
  • To apply for an "Open Work Permit" it is preferable that the spouse speaks reasonable English and/or French, and has some previous work experience.
  • There is no "Open Study Permit" in Canada. For your spouse to study, he or she needs an acceptance letter from a specific educational institution. There is also a requirement that you fulfill some financial and other requirements before they will allow your spouse to study.
  • If you spouse or children want to study, they must apply for a Study Permit before enter into Canada. In Alberta the wife or husband of a medical doctor can apply for a work permit while in the country. She will only be allowed to work for her spouse.
  • The moment both spouses have received landed immigrant status, then both can work where they want. The last statement will be true after you have finished all your exams.
